Capricorn Series: Aweko Remains Positive Despite Poor Start

Victoria Pearls captain Consy Aweko insists her team is approaching their second game of the Capricorn Eagles Quadrangular Series with a ‘positive mindset’ despite their terrible loss to United Arab Emirates in their opening game.

The Pearls who are fresh from winning the Victoria Series that was hosted here in Kampala lost their first game by 50 runs to UAE in a game that served as a source of revenge for the Arabians who were humbled by the same Ugandan team at the Victoria Series last week.

Uganda will now attempt to get the tournament going tomorrow when they face HongKong, a team that’s placed 22nd in the ICC Women’s T20 International ranking- which is three places below Uganda.

“We had light training today at Wanderers where we worked on our batting, bowling and some bit of fielding,” Aweko told The Sports Nation.

“Everyone is in good shape, the players are mentality ready for tomorrow’s game. We expect to do our best because we know we need a victory from tomorrow’s game. We are coming with a positive mindset.”

Uganda assistant coach Lawrence Sempija agrees with his captain, and says they have worked on what led to that devasting defeat on Tuesday.

“We are ready for the battle. We have worked on the mistakes we had in our first game, we hope to give them a fight tomorrow.”

Uganda will hope their opening batter Proscovia Alako rediscovers her batting form. Alako opened the year in brilliant fashion, winning herself the best batter award at the Waterfalls League in January, but she has since struggled to post runs on the card.

The hard hitter managed just 21 runs in the entirety of the Victoria Series, and against UAE on Tuesday, she scored only 14 runs before being run out in the seventh Over.

The two teams will meet at the United Ground in Windhoek where all games are being played. Uganda will take a rest on Friday, and will return to action again on Saturday in a double header that will involve the hosts Namibia and UAE.
