Dream Start for Uganda Hippos as they edge Nigeria in group opener

The Uganda Cranes U-20 stood high in group opener of all time games 2023 when they edged Nigeria on a 2-1 score on Thursday at Accra Sports Stadium.

Right from the start, Uganda Hippos was a threat despite Nigeria gaining momentum in the later stages of the game.

Abas Kyeyune could get an early lead for the Hippos only his shot to get inches wide in the 23rd minute, his second chance was a free header but didn’t find the target.

In the 33rd minute, Usama Kizza Arafat opened the score after being set well by Allan Oyirworth.

Despite, Hippos didn’t contain their lead as they were equalised later two minutes later .

Sadiq Muhammad Isiyaka stood high and headed the ball to the near post after the Hippos defence failed to clear a dead ball from a corner kick.

Nigeria returned second half recharged, but couldn’t find a break through for the second goal.

Uganda later regained momentum and got back into the game becoming a threat in the later stages of the game.

Midfielder Ivan Irinimbabazi stretched for a scorcher to earn Uganda Hippos a winner in the 81st minute.

The results meant Uganda got on top of group B on three points level with Senegal who also defeated South Sudan on a 1-0 score.

Uganda Hippos will get back in action on 11th of March 2024 as they will be versing Senegal.
