AFCON 2023: Hosts Ivory Coast defeat Nigeria to be crowned champions

Cote D’Ivoire 2-1 Nigeria.

The 2023 hosts of AFCON Cote D’Ivoire were crowned Champions of the prestigious tournament after edging Nigeria on a 2-1 score.

The hosts started in gear, possessing, creating chances and were a threat to Nigeria in every minute.

Despite, Nigeria broke the deadlock first in the 38th minute after a brilliant header from their captain William Troost Ekong.

Cote D’Ivoire leveled matters in the 62nd minute through the header of Frank Kessie thanks to a beautiful delivery from the corner Kick by Simon Adingra.

Cote D’Ivoire didn’t stop pressuring and this paid off for the winner in the 71st minute when Sebastian Haller tapped home thanks to Adingra’s cross.

Simon Andigra who features for English side Brighton and Hove Albion was named man of the match after a great display.

It was the third AFCON title for Cote D’Ivoire after winning it in 2015 as well 1992.

The results saw Cote D’Ivoire take back home $7M worthy Ug.Shs 26 billion, a trophy as well golden medals.

For runners up, Nigeria, they took home $4M worthy Ug.Shs 15 billions as well Silver Medals.
