AFCON 2023: South Africa shoot-out DR Congo to bag bronze

South Africa 0 (6-5) 0 DR Congo.

South Africa emerged as the beat third team of the ongoing AFCON 2023 after edging DR Congo on a 6-5 score in penalties after a goalless draw at Stade Felix Houphouet.

The third place playoff saw both teams bench their starting players to give a chance to the rest of the players.

South Africa had the ball most of the times 56% but failed to use it for goals.

It was DR Congo who had many attempts but most were off target (9).

South Africa were featuring in the third place playoff for their first time since 2000 with that 4-3 penalty shootout win against Tunisia after a 2-2 draw.

In penalty shootouts, South Africa goalkeeper Williams emerged the hero when he saved a crucial 7th penalty for DR Congo.

Captain Teboho Mokoena missed the first on the side of South Africa while Chancel Mbemba as well Mechack Elia missed on the side of DR Congo.

The finals will be played today as hosts Ivory Coast will be battling Nigeria.
