This year’s edition of the National Girls Schools Cricket Week came to a conclusion on Saturday with Olila High School winning their third consecutive title.
The eastern giants beat neighbors Light SS by 5 wickets in an all-Soroti final that was held at St. Mary’s, Madera to achieve that feat.
Olila took home the trophy, but Masaka SS’ Proscovia Alako emerged as the tournament Most Valuable Player with 2809 points to her name. Now As we wind up the week that was, we take a look at the tournament in numbers.
A total of 192 players from 13 schools took part in this competition that had 49 matches played. As a true deserved champion, Olila didn’t lose any game, winning all their 9 matches.
In sheer contrast though, Lords Meade Vocational Institute, the team that came last ended the competition without a single win.
Not only did Alako win the MVP award, the Victoria Pearls opener topped the batting chart with 502 runs. Olila’s Jimia Mohammed (227), Mary Namiro from Jinja SS (221), Light’s Patricia Timong (164) and Esther Iloku from Olila completed the top five.
In total, there were 4,152 runs. 352 of those were fours and 45 sixes. Alako had both the most 4s and 6s with 57 and 26 respectively.
Four players (Alako, Jimia, Namiro and Iloku) each hit a single 50, but two 100s were registered; both came from Alako. Alako also had the highest score in a game, with her 198. But in that regard, 247 ducks were recorded.
In terms of bowling, 567 wickets were picked. Patricia Timong from Light SS was responsible for 20 of those. Timong’s teammate Patricia Apolot (19), Olila’s Kevin Amuge (18), Ndejje’s Esther Namutebi (17) and Caroline Abalakake from Jinja SS with 14 completed the top five.
Seven different players including Timong picked up five wickets in a single game, but the best bowling figures went to Pursy Nakasinde from Masaka who picked 5 while conceding just one run.
There were four hat-tricks at the tournament, and 18 times players picked four wickets in a single game. Labong Yaya from Gulu High School and Immaculate Nandera and Kevin Amuge both from Olila did that in two games.
Most teams benefitted from the poor bowling. Of the extras given out at the tournament, 1,632 were wides.
The fielding area saw 250 catches and 90 run-outs recorded. Jimia in this regard led with 9 wicket catches. 206 no balls were bowled.
When beating Lords Meade by 233 runs in the Group stages, Masaka registered the highest team score of 270/1. Mt Rwenzori Girls SS however, had the lowest with 0/0.
A leather ball was used at the tourney and 9,165 balls were used in the competition.
