Alberto Atuna: Spanish Coach to lead Gazelles to AfroBasketball Championship

The Federation of Uganda Basketball Association (FUBA) has officially unveiled Spanish coach Alberto Atuna to lead the Uganda women’s basketball team the Gazelles to the AfroBasketball Championship.

This has been announced through a press briefing held at at hotel Africana in Kampala as FUBA was unveiling the provisional squad to start preparations for the Zone5 qualifiers.

Atuna a Spanish national joins the Gazelle with vast experience from the German pro league where he is a coach as well as doubling as the assistant coach of the Montenegro women team.

He is tasked with the job to help the Gazelles qualify to the AfroBasketball Championship through the Zone5 qualifiers which will be held in Lugogo.

“I appreciate the opportunity to be here in Uganda and help Uganda in the next qualifiers. It’s my first time to be in Africa but I am sure we are going to compete and make every one surprised with the girls.” Said Alberto Atuna.

“I have been working in the women basketball for quite a long time in Germany both in the club’s and the national team. I have gathered alot of information about Uganda and I know we are going to perform better in the Zone5 qualifiers.” Added the Spanish coach.

The FUBA president Nassr Sserunjogi about the Zone5 announced the the 28 player squad which will start preparations earlier.

“We are starting our campaign earlier with the girls team starting training as we prepare for a one week residential training we have 28 players summoned to start preparations for the Zone5 qualifiers.”

President Nasser Sserunjogi remains hopefully that government through NCS will come out in full support of the Zone5 qualifiers to be held at Lugogo indoor stadium.

“We have already started engaging NCS as they are aware that we are hosting this qualifiers and we have already submitted in our proposals we are hopefully that they will come on board through financing.”
