National Insurance Corporation (NIC) successfully defended their East Africa Netball Championship title after beating Prisons on Saturday.

NIC won the all-Uganda final 49-37 at the Ulinzi Sports Complex in Kenya.

It’s their 21st recording extending title for the Insurance team that won this very crown last year when they beat KCCA at Kamwokya.

NIC quickly got out of the blocks to lead the first quarter 9-6 and were up by five goals at halftime.

Prisons struggled to stage a fight back and were 27-35 down after the third quarter before NIC sealed off a deserved 49-37 victory.

It has been a successful adventure for Ali Mugisha’s side who earlier beat Ulinzi of Kenya in the semifinals.

They came into the final with a lot of skepticism having lost to Prisons back home in the penultimate game of the league season.

But going to Kenya, NIC made some good additions – Gloria Aya, Fildauce Namuleme, Sandra Nambirige and Cindrella Anena – to bolster their squad, a move that has been rewarded with a title.

Prisons who best Kenya Prisons 55-36 in the semis, settle for silver as NIC ended their chance of a double this season.

In the Men’s, WOBb beat defending Champions Kampala University 50-47 to win the East Africa title.
