Sarah Babirye: Netball President Granted Bail

Uganda Netball Federation President Sarah Babirye Kityo has been granted bail by Buganda Road Court.

Babirye, alongside businesswoman Zainab Namutebi, were accused of obtaining money by false pretence.

The two presented their sureties – Babirye’s sureties were her Husband/Fiance Dan Ntale and her Sister in law Dorothy Lwanga who is a teacher at Kitebi Primary School.

They were asked to pay Sh1m each cash and each of their two sureties asked to execute a non-cash bond of Sh4m.

Grade One Magistrate Siena Owomugisha then granted them bail.

During the hearing, the State attorney didn’t object to bail but requested for stringent terms to be imposed on the two.

The case has been adjourned to June 6 for further hearing.

On May 15, the Buganda Road Court remanded Babirye to Luzira, after she was accused of conning millions of shillings from people in promise of taking them abroad.

The accusers include a mother, Sarah Wamala, who was conned Sh8m to take her son to London.

Another accuser, Gloria Kikomeko Nantambi, also gave Babirye Sh8m, among others.

This case, is very different from the one the ongoing accountability issues with the National Council of Sports.

And the president was earlier ordered to step aside from her role recently for three months to continue investigations.
