Tournament favourites Olila High School and Jinja Senior Secondary School got off to a perfect start following their unlabored respective victories at the National Girls Schools Cricket Week that bowled off on Sunday at St. Mary’s College in Soroti.

Record Champions Jinja SS welcomed debutants and hosts St. Mary’s to cricket week in a not so welcome fashion for the latter who were tasting these waters for the first time.

The minnows who lost nine wickets managed to finish all their Overs, but were beaten by 44 runs at their own backyard.

There were 37 extras to the advantage of the Eastern giants, but Hope Mbeiza (22) and Mary Namiro led the scoring for the Jinja side as they put on board 105 for the loss of 3.

In the afternoon game, the side took their wrath to Victoria High School who they beat by 129 runs. Whitney Nassuna (40), Namiro (42), Erax Eronde(21), Mbeiza (19) and Rukia Namuleme (16) were the top batters here.

Defending Champions Olila were not given a run for their money either against another debutant Iganga Secondary School who they bowled out in the 14th Over with 22 runs only. It was an easy chase for Olila who had to use only Jimia Muhammad (15) and Lorna Anyait (4) in their lone game of the day.

Manwhile Masaka SS who are hoping to win their maiden trophy eased past Victoria High with an eight wicket win. Their star player and Victoria Pearls opening batter Proscovia Alako scored 20 in the team’s chase for 31.

The team skipper was bowled after facing only 10 balls, but she had more less won the game for her side.

Ndejje SS were victors in a low scoring game against another tournament debutant Gulu High. They won by eight wickets after chasing 28.

The games continue tomorrow with Olila facing Light SS in a Soroti derby. Jinja SS will take on Kilembe SS while Ndejje will play Mt. Rwenzori Girls SS. Masaka SS will have an off day tomorrow.
