Challenger Series: Uganda suffer another German defeat

Pool results
Day one
Uganda 31 – 07 Brazil
Uganda 26 – 07 Korea

Day two
Uganda 00 – 12 Germany

Uganda’s clean run of results in the group stages of the World Rugby Challenger Series came to an abrupt stoppage in their last Pool C game against Germany.

The Cranes found themselves on the receiving end of a crushing 12-0 defeat, with Germany scoring two tries in each half of the game.

Throughout the match, Uganda struggled to gain and control possession of the ball, with Germany dominating possession from start to finish.

“We had less of the ball and German capitalised on our mistakes.”, said Cranes captain Ian Munyani.

Despite Uganda’s valiant efforts to defend against Germany’s attacks, they were ultimately unable to prevent the German team from scoring two unanswered tries.

The defeat is undoubtedly a setback for Tolbert Onyango’s side who had been hoping to build on their opening impressive form in the group stages.

They will however take solace in the fact that they have still managed to secure a place in the quarterfinals of the campaign, finishing second behind Germany.

In the quarterfinals, Uganda will face off against Belgium who came second in Pool C.

The team will need to regroup and refocus if they hope to progress into the finals of the tournament as was their initial plan.

“We hope to be better, make more use of the ball and see how it will turn out”, Munyani stated.

“We also have to be patient with the ball while in attack,” he added.

As they prepare for their quarterfinal match against Belgium at 16.42 EAT, the African Champions will need to stay composed as this stage of the campaign has always seen them drop out mainly because of indiscipline.

The team will have to keep their calm if they are to progress to the semifinals
