Uganda came out on the wrong side of a crunch tie involving themselves and hosts Namibia at the Capricorn Eagles Quadrangular Series ongoing at the United Grounds in Windhoek.
Following their 29 run win over UAE in the morning game, the Victoria Pearls went into this game buoyed with confidence, and deservedly so, squeezed Namibia to 94 runs all out.
Stephanie Nampiina was the team’s bowling star, picking four wickets including Namibia’s best batter of the day Wilka Mwatile (23). Pacer Irene Alumo and spinner Sarah Akiteng each plucked two while Janet Mbabazi got one.
Uganda had shown their hosts a glance of where their strength lies, but as it’s been the case lately for Lawrence Sematimba’s troops, the chase didn’t start on a good note.
Proscovia Alako who displayed a Player of the Match performance against UAE with her 85 runs off 55 didn’t last to see the end of Power Play.
Alako was going for the boundary, but she got caught with the last ball of the fifth Over, and she was gone with only 11 runs. Her opening partner Esther Iloku who was starting her first game at this tournament- replacing fellow wicketkeeper Kevin Awino- followed suit in the very next Over in similar fashion with 4 runs.
Nampiina and Mbabazi tried to put things under control and indeed Uganda’s chances at this time looked pretty good, but the latter got run out in the ninth Over while the former, a run out too was dismissed in the tenth Over. The Victoria Pearls vice captain managed 6 runs while Nampiina got 14.
It was now time for Rita Musamali and Immaculate Nakisuyi to steady the ship for Uganda, and they did well in that regard, but when the wicket of Musamali fell in the 14th Over, it was havoc for the East Africans as Phionah Kulume was bowled with the very next ball. She returned to the dug out with a duck. Four balls followed and Nakisuyi was caught.
There was hope that Patricia Malemekia who was playing her second game at this tourney would drag Uganda to the finish line, but she was also run out with Uganda needing 11 runs from 12 balls. With her 16 off 13, Malemekia was Uganda’s best batter of the day. Musamali was the other player with double digits – 11.
Uganda who are placed second in the table standings will return to action tomorrow against Hong Kong who they beat by 3 wickets on Thursday.
