Watch Highlights here:

City Oilers lost to Angola’s Petro De Luanda in their opening game of the Basketball Africa League (BAL) on Thursday.

The Oilers were beaten 71-89 in a Nile Conference group game played at the Hassan Moustafa Sports Hall in Cairo, Egypt.

Mande Juruni’ side moved toe-to-toe with Petro for the best part of the game but fell off the cliff where it mattered most.

They were down by just seven heading into the last quarter, having led the game on some occasions earlier on.

But ran out of steam and struggled at both ends of the court to eventually lose by 18 points.

Fallando Jones (22), James Justice (20) and Titus Lual (10) scored in double digits for the Oilers.

Aboubacar Gakou shot 6-for-13 from the field to collect 16 points while Carlos Morais and Childe Dundao had 11 points each for the Angolans.

Oilers were out-rebounded 54-36 as Petro scored 16 second chance points against Oilers’ 4.

But Juruni will try to pick some positives from the performance, especially the team’s resilient effort against Petro who reached the final before falling to US Monastir last year.

But Oilers struggled with size went Petro went big, with William Ngor Barnaba and Abdihakim Ghedi falling into early foul trouble.

The offense looked uncoordinated on some occasions and the ball movement was lacking, but Juruni will remain positive as this was the first game for the side at this stage.

Oilers who return to action on Saturday, face hosts Al Ahly before SLAC, Cape Town and CFV Beira follow suit.

The top four sides in the group qualify for a playoff round due next month in Kigali, Rwanda.
