The spirits of the players and fans were not dampened by the day-long rain as the 2023 Guinness-sponsored SMACK League got underway on Sunday at Legends, Kampala.
A couple of games were played, and even a muddy pitch would not deter the fun that is attached to the league that is organized by the old students of St Mary’s College Kisubi.
Zimbaz (Class of 2006), produced a shocker with a 1-0 win over veterans, Mama Teo (Class of 1997) while other results included a 3-1 victory for Outkasts against the Vendors.
“Despite the heavy rain throughout the day, we had a full turn up with all 20 cohorts participating in the day’s games,” said Joseph Kasule Kawooya, Acting Chief Marketing Officer of the SMACK League.
Sixtus, as Kawooya is commonly known, said that the SMACK League season 6, like the previous seasons, will continue its mandate of championing Corporate Social Responsibility.
He added: “We will continue with the networking, sports and fitness plus shared business opportunities amongst the SMACK old boys, other attendants and partner organizations.”
The SMACK league is sponsored by Guinness, Flexipay, Legends, Captain Morgan, Stone Castle Inn, Events Limited, Soccanett and 88.2 Sanyu FM.
This new Season will also feature other sports including Esports, Golf and Basketball.
The SMACK League is a family centric social gathering run by the old boys of St.Mary’s college Kisubi that happens every two weeks at Legends.
Guinness Uganda Brand Manager, Elizabeth Mutamuliza said the brand was more than happy to be back with the SMACK League as it’s not only a way to support but also celebrate the spirit of community.
And the evening was spiced up entertainment from songbird Naava Grey who belted out her biggest hits including ‘Nteredde’.
Janzi Band turned up the heat when they performed renditions of the biggest radio bangers and a reggae session that had SMACKISTS stomping the muddy Legends grounds.
The first outing of the league was also dedicated to Chris ‘Negou’ Ntege, a SMACK Old Boy who passed on, on April 7, in a tragic car accident together with his family.
Kawooya commented: “Chris was a regular player for the Outkasts (class of 2005) since season 1. A special tribute was held through the lighting of remembrace candles.”
