Nam Blazers were denied a comeback as UCU Canons won a thriller in overtime in a pulsating National Basketball League game at Lugogo.
UCU Canons looked on course for an easy win when they led by 16 points inside the fourth quarter.
But the Blazers rallied their way back and came within a point to tie the game under a minute to play when Peter Cheng laid up, 65-66.
It could have been a three-point play as one of the match officials had indicated a bonus free-throw, but after lengthy discussions, Blazers were dramatically given possession instead.
The controversial call earned Nam Blazers coach Stephen ‘Esco’ Nyeko a Technical for repeated protests and an ensuing converted free-throw at the opposite end left the Blazers two points behind UCU.
It remained a close exchange as the side exchanged blows, and after Paul Odongo had levelled the affair from the line, UCU had a chance to win the contest with almost the last play of the game but Jerry Kayanga could only rim his three-point attempt.
In Overtime, the Canons exploded with four threes to win the five-minute period 17-7 and the contest overall 87-77.
The win is the first for UCU in two games having lost their opening game against Ndejje University Angels.
It’s the first defeat for the Blazers who beat JKL Dolphins last Saturday to get off the mark.
Lwabaga Ibanda scored a game high 22 points while Jimmy Otim and Jerry Kayanga added 20 and 18 points respectively for the Canons.
Peter Cheng (19), Geoffrey Soro (17) and Michael Makiadi (10) scored in double figures for the Blazers but their efforts proved not enough.
In the first game, JT Lady Jaguars beat UCU Lady Canons 57-53 to return to winning ways.
Moreen Amoding, Zainah Lokwameri and Sarah Ageno scored 12 points each against their former team, with the former making her debut this season.
Tracy Namugosa filled the stat-sheet with 14 points, 8 rebounds and 3 assists in a losing effort for the Canons.
