DR Congo announces former Cranes coach Sebastian Desabre as new tactician

The Leopards, DR Congo’s national team has announced ex Cranes coach Sébastien Desabre as their new head coach.

The Frenchman replaces ex Inter Milan player turned coach Hector Cuper who was sacked two months ago.

This was after a dismal performance in the 2023 AFCON qualifiers after the Congolese team failed to pick up even a single point.

Desabre has been coaching French Ligue 2 side Chamois Niortais. At first the club wasn’t happy with the Central African country for how they were trying to lure their manager.

However, the club later agreed to let him go after arriving at an agreement.

“I am very happy to announce that I am the new coach of DR Congo. I thank the management of Chamois Niortais, the players, my staff, the whole club and the supporters for two rewarding years,” Desabre tweeted.

The 46 year old has a long CV of clubs that he’s coached in his career. These include Pyramids in Egypt. He’s also previously coached in Ivory Coast, Cameroon, Tunisia, Algeria and Morocco in Africa.

Desabre is remembered and highly appreciated back in Uganda for guiding the country to the 2019 AFCON in Egypt.

Besides reaching the round of 16, the Cranes were able to play some beautiful football under him.

He will officially start his tenure with the Afcon 2023 qualifiers to be played in March after Caf postponed them from September this year.
