Boxing: Nkobeza, Kyobe cash in Africa Boxing Championships prize Money

The International Boxing Association (IBA) headed by president Umar Kremelev has finally fulfilled its promise of awarding medalist at the Africa Boxing Championships.

Ugandan boxers Nkobeza Yusuf and Kyobe Jonah have received their prize money they of $2500 won at the 2023 Africa Boxing Championships in Maputo Mozambique after winning bronze in their respective categories.

The hand over of $2500 (9,291,000) for a bronze medalist was done by the Uganda Boxing Federation president Moses Muhangi with the general Secretary Simon Barigo at Kati Kati restaurant in Lugogo on Thursday 2nd March.

“I wish to thank the effort of the boxers and their coaches for the hard toiled effort. I salute the fans, the Africa Boxing Confederation and International Boxing Association especially president Umar Kremlev. I humbly call upon the Government to help in financial resources to compete at world championships. The federation has the will power to prepare the athletes.” Said Moses Muhangi while addressing the press.

The Nakawa Boxing Club player Nkobeza Yusuf had one of the best fights in his career as he made his way to the semi finals at the continental Championships but fell short to experienced Moroccan Gharroumi Driss in middleweight category.

He expressed his happiness upon receiving the prize money for the hard works he put in while at the Africa Boxing Championships.

“I am humbled to receive the money won at the Africa Boxing Championship last year. This is a push factor to my career. I will not rest as I want to maintain the training everyday as I continue to serve my country, possibly before I turn professional in the future” said Nkobeza Yusuf.

Kyobe lost his featherweight fight against Sogauque Armando Rugoberto of Mozambique in the semifinals of the Africa Boxing Championships but he couldn’t hide his excitement after having a breakthrough year in his boxing career all the way from Kalerwe where he works as butcher man to his club Lukanga and finally enjoying a spot on the Bombers team.

“I am very happy to receive the money I was rewarded in Maputo, Mozambique. Credit goes to my coaches, my club, Uganda Boxing Federation, all my fans and the continental body.” excited Kyobe Jonah.

Uganda Boxing Federation also awarded female Boxer Teddy Nakimuli a token of 1,000,000 Uganda Shillings for bringing home a bronze medal from the Commonwealth games held in Birmingham.

Uganda Boxing Federation is having a busy calendar year as they will now turn focus to the National Open Championships.
