Stanbic Uganda Cup: Vipers, Bright Stars settle for penalties to progress to the round of 16

Uganda Premier league sides Vipers SC and Bright Stars FC progressed to the round of 16 in the Stanbic Uganda Cup after eliminating Jinja North and Mbale Heroes respectively.

Vipers played out to a goalless draw against Big league side Jinja North United but managed to progress to the round of 16 after a successful 7-6 penalty shootout Inna game played at Kakindu stadium in Bugembe.

The Venoms dominated the game throughout the 90 minutes with new signing Nzau Lutumba Miguel having the first sight for goal but his headed effort was punched away Jinja North goalkeeper for a corner.

Strikers Yunus Ssentamu and Karim Ndugwa all had chances on goal but they failed to beat ta well organized Jinja North backline for goal.

Desire Tety, Martin Kiiza, Olivier Osomba, Fabien Mutombora, Issa Mubiru and captain Milton Kariisa scored the penalties for Vipers and Jinja North United missed their last effort on goal to bow out.

It was the same fate as UPL side Bright Stars also fought hard to eliminated 10 man Mbale Heroes 4-3 in penalties at Mbale Municipal stadium after playing out to a 1-1 draw.

Amos Etojo was sent off in the 63rd minute as Manale Heroes were reduced to a man which boosted Bright Stars confidence in attack.

Emmanuel Loki headed in a cross from Denis Kaka Omony to gift Bright Stars a deserved lead in the 69th minute.

Mukisa Junior scored the equaliser for Mbale Heroes with just three minutes to stoppage time as he pounced on the defensive mistakes in the Bright Stars defence to restore hope to the home fans.

It was a tough penalty shootout as Mbale Heroes missed the opening penalty on the day before Bright Stars put all their four penalties in goal which increased pressure to the home side hence missing the last kick to bow out of the Uganda Cup.

The other game in Uganda Cup saw Mbarara City eliminate Admin FC by a 1-0 score courtesy of a lone goal scored by Henry Kitegenyi from the penalty spot at Kakyeeka stadium in Mbarara.
