Uganda 1-1 Somalia

Somalia win 8-7 after penalties

Uganda Cubs journey in the CECAFA U17 regional qualifiers for the 2023 AFCON tournament was halted in a penalty knockout by Somalia in the semi-finals.

Somalia won the game in penalties after coming from a goal down to force a 1-1 draw against Uganda at Abebe Bikila stadium in Ethiopia.

Jamal Ssemwogerere put Uganda ahead with a brilliant goal in the first stanza, Abdihafid Andi replied as he dribbled past the cubs defence to set himself with a keeper to beat chance and converted brilliantly to draw the scores.

The Somalis went a head to win in the shootouts as the defending champions and favourites Uganda fumbled to be eliminated on the semi-final round.

Somali have now booked a slot in the U17 AFCON tournament which will be hosted in Algeria as they will wait on to face either Tanzania or South Sudan in the finals.

This is the first time for any Somalis team to ever qualify for a major tournament on Africa levels.
