Airtel Masaza Cup: Kabaka’s surprise appearance powers Buddu to victory

The 2024 Airtel Masaza Cup saw an epic climax as Buddu defeated Kyaggwe to be crowned champions as Kabaka Ronald Muwenda Mutebi graced the occasion in a surprise appearance.

After a period of longevity without appearing in a mass, Kabaka Ronald Muwenda Mutebi graced the finals of the 2024 Masaza Cup as he watched the entire first half of the game whereby Buddu scored the only goal by Mike Walaga in the 22nd minute to win the game.

The katikiro of Buganda Eng. Charles Peter Mayiga shared a moment of happiness as he thanked the Kabaka for gracing the finals.

“I take this opportunity to thank the entire Buganda who welcomed the Kabaka who graced the finals of the Masaza Cup, I also take this opportunity to thank the fans and our sponsors who have moved with us through this tournament that is Majestic Brands, Airtel Uganda, Centenary Bank, Plascon and all other partners we have on board.”

He also went on to congratulate Buddu and Kyaggwe for the entertaining game displayed.

“I also take this opportunity to congratulate Buddu for winning this year’s edition but also big thanks to Kyaggwe staging a great fight as this has been their first final apperance. We have enjoyed the game today and we look forward to next year’s tournament.”

The Airtel Uganda director of sales Ali Balunywa couldn’t hide his happiness as he thanked the Kabaka for gracing the finals and also witnessing one of the most attended masaza Cup tournament for over the years.

“As Airtel Uganda we are so happy and take this opportunity to thank his majesty the Kabaka of Buganda for gracing the finals. We congratulate the winners of Buddu for taking the third championship but also congratulate Kyaggwe for the great game displayed.”

“As the sponsors, we thank the fans who ave been with us from when this tournament started and also turned up in huge numbers today. This has been one of the most attended tournaments for over the years, we thank the minister and the organizing committee for the entire arrangement and the mobilization that has been there today. We hope that next year it will be great as we hope for new talents in all the 18 counties.”

Buddu also took home a cash plaque of 12 million Uganda Shillings as they also swooped almost every individual award with the best goalkeeper award being handed to Marvin Ssebirago, tournament MVP being their captain Pius Ssebulime and with the top scorer of the tournament award being handed to Buluuri’s Robert Ssewanyana with 7 goals to his name.

In the third-place match, Buweekula triumphed over Kyaddondo with a convincing 3-1 win.
