AFCON Qualifiers: Uganda picks up vital away draw to start campaign on a high

The Cranes from Uganda started their 2024 AFCON qualifiers campaign in high gears as they picked up a 2-2 draw against Bafana Bafana at Orlando Stadium.

Uganda who suffered an early goal as South Africa scored in the 14th minute from a close range finish from Lyle Foster.

The first half goal ensured that the Cranes ended the first stanza trailing from the back as a second team in the game.

Second half saw the Cranes come back stronger with a couple of changes as Allan Okello replaced Travis Mutyaba.

The new kid on the block led Uganda’s resurgence in the game as debutant Denis Omedi scored a hit to draw the scores level in the 51st minute.

With just two minutes from the equaliser, a strong Uganda side took the lead in the game with a goal from Rogers Mato Khassim.

The Cranes played hard as they held onto their 2-1 lead denying South Africa a couple of chances but their work was cut short in the 95th minute as the host secured a massive draw coutsery of a goal by Thalente Mbatha.

Uganda will now turn focus to their second group stage game against Congo to be played on Monday at Mandela National Stadium Namboole.
