Inaugural Tech for the World annual Chess Championships to award scholarships to winners

The first edition of TECH for the World annual Chess Championship took centre stage on Monday 22nd January 2023 at the Sports Outreach Ministry Resource Center in Kiwawu, Mityana Road with participants from various Chess academies under SOM.

The Championship which is organised by Som Chess academy is only competed by students involving primary and secondary students only.

This edition, only 156 participants taking place ,Gulu -16, Hoima -7, Masaka -28 and the rest from Kampala suburbs of Kibuli, Katwe, Bwaise and Kawempe.

The grand prize for the winners will include, winning scholarship for 4 students including two boys from primer and secondary and two girls from primary and secondary and also medals and trophies will be other prizes to be given away.

“This Championship is first of it’s kind in East Africa and Uganda and it will be running annually where four scholarships will be given every edition”, said Robert Katende.

Katende, who is the head of Katende initiative foundation and also a CEO of Som Chess Academy went on to say that they faced a challenge of transporting students from Gulu, Hoima and Masaka where they could not manage to transport all the students.

The Championship will run for the three days and final will be played on Wednesday with the chief guest confirmed to be the head of TECH for the World, who is currently in America.
