World Athletics Championships: Victor Kiplangat wins Gold for Uganda

Uganda’s Victor Kiplangat clinched gold in the men’s marathon at the 2023 World Athletics Championships on Sunday morning in Budapest, Hungary.

The 23 year old athlete won the title in a period of 2 hours, 8 minutes and 53 seconds.

In a field with alot of experienced run including 2022 World Champion Tamirat Tola from Ethiopia, Kiplingat managed to save time to point to crowd as he was cherishing for his latest achievement.

Alot of runners had chances to take on front pages with the first 5km in the first 15 minutes being dominated by Mongolian veteran Ser – od Bat- Ochir.

With 11 Km covered, it was Rwanda’s John Hakizimana who led the front runners with Ugandan Andrew Rotich Kwemoi also among.

By the 35Km only two runners Kiplangat and Ethiopia’s Leul Gebresilase could prove their worth of winning Gold.

However by the 40 Km mark, it was a show piece by Kiplangat who had left Ethiopia’s Leul Gebresilase for 13 seconds.

Isreal’s Maru Teferi who had a strong second half of the marathon overcame Gabresilase to take on Silver on time 2:09:12 meanwhile Gabresilase finished with Bronze on time 2:09:19.

Kiplangat registered the second gold for Uganda in the ongoing World Athlethe Championship in Budapest after Cheptegei’s 10000 M gold.

Meanwhile Kiplangat was winning the seventh gold for Uganda in the history of World Athletics Championships.

Kiplangat also added other gold to his achievement having won the Common wealth Marathon title at the games that were held in Birmingham last year.
