FUFA Super 8: 2022/2023 Double Champions Vipers drawn against BUL FC

The third edition of the FUFA Super 8 tournament returns after three years hiatus, KCCA FC win the inaugural edition as they edged Onduparaka 2-1 and later Vipers winning the second edition after defeating KCCA FC by a 1-0 defeat in Wankulukuku.

The 2022/2023 season double Champions Vipers SC will face Jinja based side BUL FC in the quarterfinals round as KCCA FC who finished second in the league will travel away to face Wakiso Giants.

The 2023 FUFA Super 8 tournament has seen a couple of changes with the top two big league teams being dumped out and it will only be competed in by the top eight teams in the just concluded Uganda Premier League season.

“The super 8 is a revamped competition as we used to have six teams from the top flight league and two from the FUFA Big league but we have revised the tournament as it will only be played by the top eight ranked teams in the Uganda Premier League, this is looked as it will add more competition to the teams in the league and it will act as a preseason tournament for the games as teams will play more games before the league kicks off.” Said Rodgers Byamukama.

This has also seen the sponsorship package of more than 60 million Uganda Shillings being lost as the tournament is now in search for a new sponsor after the exit of Pilsner as the main sponsor of the tournament.

According to Uganda Premier League chairman Bernard Bainamani, the Super 8 tournament is slated to be played between the 4th of August to 14th September as they target to add more competitiveness in the top eight clubs as they will play more games before the start of the 2022024 Uganda Premier League season.

“The FUFA Super 8 tournament is the third edition and it will be played by the top eight ranked teams  in the just concluded UPL 2022/2023 season, it used to be six teams from the top flight league and two top team in the FUFA Big league but we have made some changes in the playing  format and it will be played by only Uganda Premier League teams, this we add more competition in the tournament and also the league as the top eight teams will be playing more than three games before the league kicks off,” said Bernard Bainamani.

The tournament will have classification games whereby the losing quarterfinalists will face each other in order to have the final positions, this will see more game played in the tournament besides the first two editions.
