The Elgon Wolves defied all odds as they triumphed over Warriors 15-10 in the championship semifinals, securing a spot in the URU Championship Final 2023.
The Wolves’ victory came as a surprise to many, who had considered Warriors as the front-runners in this clash, but the eastern side was not shy walking away with the “triumph of the underdog”
Having suffered relegation from the premiership league in the 2022 premiership season, Warriors saw this year’s playoffs as an opportunity to reclaim their rightful place among the rugby elite.
They started their campaign on a positive note, emerging victorious in the quarterfinals against the Tooro Lions who they defeated 41-16.
However, their hopes were dashed when they faced off against the Eastern League champions—Elgon Wolves, in a tense semifinal encounter held at Damwaters on 3rd of June, 2023.
Meanwhile,Elgon Wolves, fresh off their resounding 55-03 quarterfinal victory over Mbarara Titans, carried the same energy and spirit into the semifinals.
Despite conceding first, they managed to level the score at 7-all before halftime, effectively erasing the seven-point deficit.
The second half witnessed a gripping battle as both teams fought tooth and nail to gain the upper hand.
Wolves took the lead with a penalty, but the Warriors responded admirably, keeping the score at a nail-biting tie of 10-10.
However, the Wolves refused to let go of their dreams, they scored a crucial try, adding five more points to their tally.
With Warriors failing to respond appropriately, chances of an “all central final affair” were eliminated as the Wolves booked themselves a spot in the final
In the other semifinal, Kitante Eagles soared to a 21-11 victory over the Gulu City Falcons, keeping their hopes alive in their pursuit of playing in the prestigious rugby premier league.
They will now take on Elgon Wolves in the final scheduled to be played at Legends rugby grounds, on 10th June, 2023.
The clash between these two sides will not only determine the champion of this championship tournament but will also decide which team earns the coveted spot in the 2024 Nile Special Premiership Rugby League and so, for both sides, there is everything on the line to play for.
