Masaza Cup: The 19th Edition officially launched in the rains of Bulange

The 2023 Masaza Cup tournament  officially launched in an eventful affair graced by the rainy waters held at Bulange in Mengo on Wednesday 21st June as the Katikiro Charles Peter Mayiga flagged off the 19th edition.

Started in 2004, Masaza Cup is an annual Buganda Kingdom Football tournament that brings all Buganda Kingdom counties to compete for the Masaza Cup Football tournament.

Commenting about Airtel’s contribution, Airtel Uganda Managing Director, Manoj Murali said, It is always an honour as Airtel to contribute towards a good cause that not only offers social entertainment but also a platform that nurtures the Country’s footballing talent,”

He added that, “The spirit of solidarity displayed by both the players and individuals or communities who participate in the tournament is one that ought to be supported, and it gives us great pride to be part of a cause that unites Buganda and the sports fratenity.”

The 2023 tournament will kick off on Saturday, 24th June as holders Busiro will host Mawokota at Wankulukuku Stadium in the opening game which is to be graced by the Kabaka of Buganda Ronald Muwenda Mutebi II.

The Katikiro of Buganda Charles Peter Mayiga confirmed the great news of the Kabaka gracing the opening game at Wankulukuku as he urged the counties to mobilize fans to come in big numbers as the tournament gets underway.

“I am glad to announce that the Kabaka of Buganda, Ronald Muwenda Mutebi II is pleased to attend the first game on Saturday between Busiro and Mawokota at Mutesa II Royal Stadium in Wankulukuku.” said the Katikiro.

He went ahead to emphasize on the discipline of players at all times sonas to portray a greater picture in the games they play.

“The players must be disciplined at all times by attending all coaching sessions religiously, avoid alcoholism and womanizing. Always be humble to the coaches and officials, respect each other and the fans. Do not lose focus and be patient under all circumstances. Be professional at all times.”

“Football is a sport and an industry that employs many. I appeal you (footballers) respect the game” added Katikiro Charles Peter Mayiga.

Kansai Plascon revealed a Shs 100,000,000 package for this year’s championship.

They join Airtel Uganda Limited, Centenary Bank, BBS Telefaina, Cbs radio and UNAIDS.

The Masaza cup teams received team jerseys (50 units each), 5 balls apiece and each got Shs10,000,000 prior to the kick-off of the tournament.
