Hockey Uganda Cup: Holders Deliverance Seek Perfect Start

Defending Champions Deliverance Church will seek to get their title defence in the Uganda Cup to a good start when they face Makerere University in their opening game on Saturday.

Deliverance Church are not enjoying the best of forms in the league as they find themselves placed 5th in the table standings with only two wins, but with them being the only female side to have lifted the Uganda Cup trophy, and with Makerere who are two places below them providing opposition, they will fancy their chances to get their Uganda Cup campaign on a good note.

Deliverance go into this match off the back of falling to Wananchi in form of a 4-1 loss, but their top scorer Brenda Achayo who has netted 8 goals in the league will be looked upon to overcome any form of resistance Makerere will bring.

Wananchi consider themselves the big dogs in Ugandan hockey, but they have never won this trophy. They will open this year’s campaign against Weatherhead Historicals on the same day before the two sides meeting again the following day.

Wananchi will want to halt Deliverance’s good fortunes in this Cup, and that starts with them beating the Historicals who in the league, sit 6th with a solitary win.

Kampala Swans who lead the table standings in the women’s division play Wananchi sister club Wananchi-HDF while Weatherhead will face Thunders, the bottom side in the league.
