Youth Chess Olympiad: Uganda Name Squad of 12 Players

Uganda Chess Federation (UCF) have commenced the preparations for the U16 Youth Chess Olympiad set to be held in Eindhoven in Netherlands between 12-19 Augusts.

It will be the first time Uganda will partake in this Chess competition, and twelve players grouped into three pools will represent the country.

As the mode of their training, players have been handed study material provided on an online space, and their progress tracked.

The general practice sessions which last four hours happen every Sunday at a selected resident.

While speaking to The Sports Nation, team coach Walter Okas says the emphasis on their preparations is on ‘athlete fitness’.

“Athlete fitness is the main focus,” Okas an Olympian himself said.

“Studying lots of the middle game and common endgame concepts. And certainly polishing up openings and repertoires, game and team strategy.”

The twelve players were selected from a national Qualifier that took place in February at the Gloria’s Garden.
