NEC FC’s qualifications chances were handed a huge blow following their 2-1 loss at home against Lugazi on Thursday.

Gerald Ogweti’s first brace was enough as Lugazi defeated the Bugolobi based side.

Substitute Geofrey Sserunkuma scored late in the game as his side NEC FC dropped vital points at home.

It was a big blow for NEC FC, who are eyeing promotional places this season.

The loss, sixth for NEC this season saw them remain third with 51 points and are now just a point above fourth placed Police FC, who thrashed Northern Gateway to close the gap.

On thursday, it was the visitors that showed early intent to scored as they dorminated from the word go.

Earlier, Ogweti had his effort parried away by goalkeeper Jeans Wokorach before Lugazi FC captain Brian Ssali was also denied.

And finally, Ogweti broke the deadlock in the 33rd minute, tapping in from a rebound after Shafik Kiryowa’s initial effort had been saved by NEC goalkeeper Wokorach.

And at the stroke of half time, Ogweti completed his brace, looping the ball past Wokorach to put his side in comfortable lead before the break.

On the other end, NEC’s inform forward Tonny Kiberu was pickpocketed, on a day his side lacked enough ideas upfront.

After the break, the hosts returned back a better side as they launched a come back.

The introduction of veteran striker Geoffrey Sserunkuma brought more life in their attacking force as they started opening up.

And Sserunkuma pulled one goal back in the 77 th minute, a goal that had given NEC hope of a come back.

But despite conceding, Lugazi held on and defended tirelessly to pick all the needed points.

The result was a big blow for NEC, who are targeting a place in the UPL next season. And they will need to play each of their last two each like a final if they are to book a place in the top flight.

For Lugazi, they now moved to the 5th position with 40 points after 28 games.
