Kiira College Butiki have been crowned this year’s Champions of the Father Grimes National Schools Chess Championship in the Secondary Open Category following their 3.5-0.5 win over St. Henry’s College Kitovu on Tuesday.
After dislodging Kyadondo SS from the top position, Butiki went into the penultimate round that was played in the morning level on points with St Henry’s, but they outsmarted their opponents in the final round to win the competition.
Ntare School came second while Ndejje SS finished third.
St. Henry’s ended up finishing outside the top ten in the eleventh position while defending champions Kings College Budo came 20th.
In the Secondary-Girls category, St. Andrews Kaggwa won the trophy without losing a single game. They won six and drew twice. Maryhill High School, Wampewo SS, Iganga SS and Budo were 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th respectively.
In the Primary Open category, Friends International Christian Academy emerged champions after winning all their eight matches. KCCA PS Kamwokya were second after beating Mustard Seed by a tiebreaker. Both sides won 6 and drew twice, finishing with 18 points each, but KCCA won on a tiebreaker two with 26 points compared to Mustard Seed’s 22 points.
Sir Apollo Kaggwa and Gombe Junior School completed the top five.
In the Primary Girls category, Peak took home the trophy while St. Theresa Namagunga PS A came second. Their B side came third while URDT came fourth and All Saints fifth.
Elvis Mugisha from Mount Olives emerged the best player on board one in the Secondary Open category with an unbeaten 8 points. Mugisha won all his eight games. On board two, Home Schooler Mwase Arthur owned it winning seven out of eight while Shabib Mohammed from Bukedea SS bossed board 3 outwitting all his opponents on that board. The final board which is board four was won by Freddy Mugisha from Kisubi High School who also won all his games.
In the Secondary Girls category, Atuhura Mackline from URDT Girls School was the best on Board 1 with seven out of 8 points while Bukirwa Evelyn from Trinity College Nabbingo was the best on Board 2 also with seven out of eight points. Nakalyowa Sarah from St. Andrew’s Kaggwa Kawala bossed Board 3 with 7.5 points out of eight while Akot Emmanuela also from St. Andrew’s Kaggwa was best on on Board 4 with seven out of eight points.
