City Oilers Blow Out UPDF To Clinch Sixth Win

City Oilers beat UPDF Tomahawks 87-53 to extend their perfect start to the 2023 National Basketball League season.

The victory was built on a second half blitz where Oilers turned the screw en route to a sixth win from as many games.

Much has been talked about Oilers offensive armoury this season, but on Sunday, the Oilers showed their ability at the back when they limited UPDF to a combined 21 points in the entire second half.

UPDF had gone toe-to-toe with Oilers in the opening half, and trailed by just four points at the long break.

But failed to last the distance especially in the last quarter which Oilers opened with 22 unanswered points!

Titus Lual knocked a double double of 25 points, Fayed Bbale was a joy to watch and added 19 points while dishing out six assists while Luak Ruai contributed 10 points.

Arthur Wanyoto had 16 points while Micahel Kojo (10) was the other UPDF player in double digits.

UPDF turned over the ball 32 times, mostly on Oilers high press, and were guilty of a some of silly fouls including Ferdinand Odama on Titus Lual which was the fifth for the former.

Baker Kyambadde will try to pick some positives from this, but areas to improve include improving on the team’s effort on the perimeter after missing all their 11 three-point attempts.

Elsewhere:
KIU Titans overcame Ndejje University Angels thanks to a 89-72 victory.

Amisi Saidi Danny and Peter Obleng led the way with 23 points each for the Titans who recorded their third straight win since falling to Oilers in the opener.

John Obrack and Joseph Kumbai had 21 and 15 points respectively for John Omondi’s side who lost their second game in four games.

Nam Blazers also staged a second-half blitz to beat KCCA Panthers 89-69 to return to winning ways after the dramatic overtime loss against UCU Canons on Friday.

Peter Cheng top scored with 22 points, Geoffrey Soro who was unrested had 19, Guddi Nasser came off the bench to deliver his best performance in a Blazers jersey with 15 points, 8 rebounds and 3 assists while Mike Makiadi and Paul Odongo (MacGyver) had 12 points each.

In the Women’s Division, Ruth Atuheire scored 15 points as KCCA Leopards beat Miracle Eaglets who had shocked KIU Rangers on Saturday.

The win, is the second in as many games for KCCA who started their campaign with a victory over JKL Lady Dolphins.

In the day’s first game, JKL pummeled Nkumba Lady Marines 130-49 in a game the two-time champions led by 50 points at halftime!

Every JKL player went on scoresheet, with seven – Brenda Ekone (20), Christine Namulumba (18), Leticia Awor (16), Becky Longom (16), Hope Akello (14), Stella Nikuze (13) and Grant Generous (13) – reaching double figures.
