Choose Sports Where We Have Comparative Advantage – Muhangi to Gov’t

Uganda Boxing Federation President Moses Muhangi has urged Government to put more emphasis on Sports where the Country has comparative advantage.

Muhangi made the remarks while appearing on NBS top political show The Frontline hosted by Charles Mwanguhya.

His comments are a sign of discontent in line with the Government appropriation of funds to the Sports Sector.

It should be noted that from the Sh47bn allocated to the Sports sector, FUFA (Football) takes the lion’s share of Sh17bn while the remaining 51 federations share the remaining Sh30bn.

Muhangi believes that this is wrong and unfair because Uganda doesn’t have a comparative advantage in a highly funded football.

The President is of the view that Government should put more emphasis on Sports Disciplines where they have a higher probability of winning.

“When you look at countries like China, these are big economies but then they have Sports of choice and their flagship Sport is not football but they have Table tennis and a Country like India is into Cricket where they know they have comparative advantage,” Muhangi stated.

“In Uganda on the contrary, we don’t have more funds but again we continue to invest those little resources in a Sport (Football) which we all know we don’t have comparative advantage given our history.

“We have so far invested Sh28bn in the renovation of Namboole, and we cannot actually use it at the moment.

“But we have 51 Sports Federations that have even given Uganda bigger mileage for example Boxing, Netball, Athletics, Basketball etc. Boxing used to be number three in Africa until we stopped funding it.”

He added that the Sh26bn that has so far been injected in Namboole renovation should have actually helped in putting up stadium and training facilities for Boxing, Netball, Athletics.
