The 64 schools to take part in the 2023 Secondary Schools National Boys Football Championship have been confirmed.
The tournament, previously known as Copa Coca-Cola, is due May 7-20 2023 at Nyakasura SS in Fort Portal (Kabarole).
St Mary’s SS Kitende are the defending champions having beaten St Andrew Kaggwa Gombe High School in 2022 Finals held at Barifa Stadium in Arua.
That, was the 10th Copa title for the Lawrence Mulindwa-owned school who previously won it in 2019, 2015, 2013, 2012, 2011, 2008, 2007, 2006 and 2004.
Kitende qualified automatically as defending champions, despite going through Wakiso qualifiers where they were beaten by Buddo in the finals.
Wakiso therefore qualified six schools, the other four are Kawempe Royal College, Standard High Zzana, London College and St Juliana.
The biggest shocker was in Kampala as last year’s runners up St Andrew failed to make it through after use of ineligible player during the Rubaga preliminaries.
Kampala brought five schools, with Kibuli SS qualifying as the regional champions after beating Uganda Martyrs 2-0 in the finals.
Kawempe Muslim, Old Kampala and Mengo SS are the other three, with the latter making a historical qualification for the very first time after eliminating Buziga Islamic.
It’s strong to note that Kibuli SS are the record winners of this competition, with 11, having won a couple when the tournament was still called UTV Cup in the 90s.
They beat Buddo SS 3-0 to clinch Bronze in last year’s Third Place playoff match.
Busoga, just like Kampala, will have five representatives including 2017 winners Jinja SS.
The other four are Jinja Progressive Academy, Victoria High School, Lakeside SS Masese and Jinja Comprehensive.
Teso Region will have four representatives – Amus College, Alwa SS, Teso Progressive and Bukedea Comprehensive.
In Masaka, St Jude SS who finished 12th last year, didn’t make it this time. With three slots taken by St Henry’s College Kitovu, Africa With Love High School and Blessed Sacrament Kimanya.
All schools will be expected to arrive at Nyakasura on Sunday, May 7 2023 before Monday’s pre championship meeting. And the tournament will get underway on Tuesday, May 9.
The tournament, as it stands, doesn’t have a sponsor and the costs are shared amongst the Schools, Government among others.
The tournament is organised by Uganda Secondary Schools Sports Association (USSSA).
