Stanbic Uganda Cup: Vipers shootout Wakiso Giants to hand Isabirye victory on debut

Vipers progressed to the quarterfinals round of the Stanbic Uganda Cup after a successful penalty shootout as they defeated Wakiso Giants 4-3 in penalties.

The venoms under new head coach Alex Isabirye came from a goal down to force a 1-1 draw as they yet again appeared on the score sheet despite their winless run continuing. 

Shariph Kimbowa put the hosts ahead with a beautiful goal in the early minutes of second half and a goal from defender Ashraf Mandela was enough to send the game into penalties.

Second half substitutes Norman Ogik and Tom Masiko missed from the spot as Wakiso Giants bowed out of the Stanbic Uganda Cup.

The purple sharks dominated the game in possession but they failed to be sharp on front of goals as the first stanza ended without a shot on goal from the home side.

Vipers had a couple of moments were they created goal scoring opportunities with Karim Watambala the sharp player on the day and in the 30th minute his corner was headed in by Karim Ndugwa but goalkeeper Bashir Ssekagya made a vita save to deny him fom close range.

Wakiso Giants returned back strong in second half as they continued to dominate the game and with just five minutes into the game, Marvin Nyanzi layed up a lofted pass to set up Shariph Kimbowa who put the ball in the back of the net with a volley on the turn to gift Wakiso a 1-0 lead in the 50th minute.

Vipers were eager to make an early come back and the introduction of Bright Anukani and Abubaker Lawal helped them going forward.

In the Karim Watambala once again tested goalkeeper Ssekagya but his powerful shot was parried away for a corner.

Shariph Kimbowa had the chance to double Wakiso Giants lead but his shot went inches wide after a beautiful interplay from the Sharks midifield.

Norman Ojik also had a chance to put the ball in the back of the net with his first touch after being set up by Hassan Ssenyonjo for a keeper to beat situation but goalkeeper Mutombora stood tall on his ground to deny him from close range

In the 80th minute, Martin Kiiza  pounced on a loose ball in the purple sharks defence as they failed to clear a corner kick and and set up Ashraf Mandela who fired home to level the scores.

Vipers remain yet to win a game in the Uganda Cup after all their three games played from the round of 64 ending in draws as they need penalties to progress.
