World Cup: Cameroon bow out fighting as Ghana denied revenge

Cameroon wrote history at the 2022 world cup in Qatar as they became the first African nation to collect a massive victory against Brazil.

Cameroon defeated Brazil 1-0 courtesy of a late goal from captain Vicente Abubaker to finish third in group G with four points collected coming short of progressing to the round of last 16 behind Switzerland.

Vicente Abubaker headed in from close range in the 90+ minute to beat goalkeeper Ederson as he gifted Cameroon victory before being sent off for a second bookable offence as he removed his shirt celebrating his second goal in the tournament.

Switzerland picked up a massive victory in an entertaining five goals thriller as they edged Serbia 3-2 to book a slot in the round of 16.

Brazil topped group G with six points collected in their first two games after defeating Serbia and Switzerland, a loss against Cameroon couldn’t affect their progress to the last 16 round.

In group H, Ghana needed a win against Uruguay in a what looked to be a revenge of 2010 as Uruguay eliminated Ghana in the round of 16 as Luis Suarez handed the ball as it crossed the line.

Asamoah Gyan missed the resulting penalty for Ghana and this time round it was pay back time as the Africans wanted revenge.

Ghana had the better opportunity to open the scoring but captain Andrew Ayew missed from the spot with a poorly taken penalty.

Giorgian de Arrascaeta scored two quick goals to put Uruguay in a 2-0 lead as Ghana defended poorly but Uruguay failed to qualify out of the group as their efforts were cut short by a South Korean win against Portugal.

South Korea recovered from a goal down to claim a 2-1 win against Portugal and finish second in group H with a better goal difference ahead of Uruguay as both nation’s ended up on four points.
