Ugandan players miss out on CAF Champions League football

A number of Ugandan players missed out on playing in the 2022-2023 CAF Champions League season after they saw their sides fail to make it to the next round of the CAF preliminary round.

Steven Mukwala couldn’t help his Ghanaian side Asante Kotoko to the next round despite being the favorites to win the tie against Burkina Faso’s Kadiogo FC who were the underdogs.

The Porcupine Warriors came into the second leg game with a 1-0 advantage secured in Ghana.

Kadiogo however won the game by the same scoreline which made the game to be tied.

The two sides went into a penalty shootout which saw Kadiogo win 3-1.

Tadeo Lwanga was also unfortunate in his quest for Champions League football which luckily for him he tasted while at Simba.

His new side Arta Solar from Djibouti that has a number of famous players couldn’t get passed Sudanese side Al-Merrikh.

This game saw another Ugandan Erick Kambale net the first goal as Al-Merrikh won 2-1 away.

Uganda Cranes goalkeeper Charles Lukwago also saw his Ethiopian side St George dumped out of the tournament by Sudanese side Al-Hilal.

St George had won the first leg 2-1. Al Hilal however won the second leg by a goal to nil which saw the game end 2-2 on aggregate.

Al Hilal progressed to the next stage on away goals rule.

Meanwhile Ugandan midfielder Khalid Aucho saw his Tanzanian side Young Africans progress to the next round by a 9-0 aggregate win against South Sudanese side Zalan FC.

Yanga won 4-0 and 5-0 in the first and second leg respectively.
