By Kadugala

TotalEnergies Uganda has announced a two-year sponsorship deal for Uganda Rugby Sevens men and women’s national teams. The annual sponsorship is worth USD 15,000 (UGX 57 Million) and is aimed at facilitating the the teams’ training and development in line with TotalEnergies Foundation pillar of youth inclusion and education.

While addressing the media at the sponsorship unveiling at Kyadondo Rugby Club in Kampala on Wednesday, Jean Gavalda who’s the Business, Development and Corporate Affairs Director, TotalEnergies EP Uganda said that they share the same aspects with rugby which includes team work and inclusion.

“TotalEnergies EP Uganda has committed to make a positive impact on livelihood. Participating to youth inclusion is one of our pillars towards that goal. Rugby is interesting as the team is above the individual and in the same time the team doesn’t perform without individuals,” Gavalda said.

Uganda Rugby Union President Godwin Kayangwe said that part of the sponsorship will go towards developing Uganda Rugby Sevens academies.

“These academies feed the main teams so it’s good that we put much emphasis on them,” Kayangwe said adding that; “the academies will be part of the upcoming Safari 7s and we shall ensure that they’ll prepare very well.”

While commenting on the sponsorship, Kayangwe noted that it’s a good begining to a relationship they hope to grow and with TotalEnergies sponsoring various events at global and continental level, they hope to maintain the same spirit at local level.

Meanwhile, the men’s team will be preparing for the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series while the women’s side will be preparing for the Rugby Africa Cup Qualifiers scheduled for October and November this year.
