Rugby World Cup 2022: Uganda Rugby Sevens officially flagged off

The Uganda national Rugby team has been officially flagged by th state minister for sports Peter Ogwang for the Rugby 7’s World Cup in Cape town South Africa from 9th – 11th September.

The flag off happened in a press briefing at the Cooper Chimney restaurant in Lugogo and graced by the Uganda Olympic committee president Don Rukare, the general Secretary Patrick Ogwel.

Ministry Peter Ogwang pleaded to support the Rugby cranes with all necessary support and also to lobby for the development of infrastructures in the country.

“I am going to work with the Uganda Rugby Union with support in all activities as my main focus is with the players. We don’t have an accredited international pitch I pledge that we are going to look for development money as a ministry to have a standard international pitch so that we can host such events.”

“I officially flag you off to go and represent the nation and come back with success from Cape town.” Said Minister Peter Ogwang during the flag off.

Team captain Micheal Wokorach has expressed the teams readiness ahead of the rugby sevens world cup with lessons picked from the commonwealth games.

“The players are ready to go and perform, we have just come back from the commonwealth games and Chile. It was the best performance we have ever achieved in commonwealth games by finishing 10th. There is  a big task ahead of us as players but we are going to our best and achieve positive results.” Said Michael Wokorach.

A team of 12 players which was earlier named by the head coach Tolbert Onyango is under the captaincy of Michael Wokorach.

They will fly out on Monday to head to South Africa for their second world cup with the opening game against Samoa where the winner will face off with USA in the round of 16.
